It was released by Paramount Pictures in VistaVision on October 5, 1956 and is considered amongst the highest grossing films in North American box office history. It was directed by Cecil B. DeMille and starred Charlton Heston in the lead role.

In 2008, AFI recognized the Ten Commandments film as one of its ten best epic films. The Ten Commandments film won the Academy award for best visual effect back in 1957.
